Portugal coronavirus death toll is 1,175



Portugal's coronavirus death toll has reached 1,175. Total number of confirmed virus cases is 28,132.

The following is an interesting Portugal update from May 8.

The North region is the one with the highest number of deaths (639), followed by the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (233), the Center (214), the Algarve (13), the Azores (14) and the Alentejo that registers in 1 case, the epidemiological situation report advances, with data updated until midnight on Thursday, maintaining the Autonomous Region of Madeira with no record of deaths.

Portugal has set June 4 for the resumption of the Primeira Liga season. The championship was suspended on March 12 due to the Coronavirus Covid-19 Pandemic.

Some restrictions are easing now in Portugal. This allows the opening of some more businesses and certain activities.

The Government of Portugal is working "hard" to help Portuguese emigrants to return to Portugal in the summer, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently told the local media.

Portugal is certainly hoping for a better economy with hopes of early reopening of tourism. About 30 million tourists visit Portugal every year. Authorities are planning to reopen hotels and beaches by mid-June.

    Call Center Workers Strike for Telework in Portugal

    Some Portuguese call center workers were forced to come to work during the pandemic. Some demanded to switch to teleworking at home without loss of pay. Some workers refused to go to work. Some took sick leave. Some asked for vacation days. Some workers appeared at the call centers but refused to log in.

  2. Portugal seemingly fared better than Spain.


    Less political fragmentation meant greater support for an earlier lockdown in Portugal, credited with saving lives.


    "The most important point to raise is that the first registered case in Portugal was a month later than the first case in Spain: March 2 versus January 31," argues Guillermo Martínez de Tejada de Garaizabal, professor of microbiology and parasitology at the University of Navarra in northern Spain.
