USA plans troop withdrawal from Germany after Merz criticism

DW News has the story.

Pentagon officials say the United States plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, where more than 40,000 US service members are currently stationed — Washington's second largest overseas deployment after Japan.

The move comes amid tensions between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has criticized the Trump administration's lack of an exit strategy in the joint US-Israeli war against Iran.

The conflict has driven fuel prices higher following the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for Gulf oil exports. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius says the troop reduction is foreseeable as the US shifts its strategic focus.

We spoke to Ralf Hechler, mayor of Ramstein — home to the largest US airbase outside the United States — and Sudha David Wilp of the German Marshall Fund about whether the withdrawal is linked to Merz's remarks and what it could mean for Ramstein's future role.

Germany: Will combustion engines survive?

DW News has the story.

Germany is pressing to soften the European Union’s 2035 ban on new combustion engine vehicles, arguing hybrids, range extenders, and synthetic fuels deserve room in the transition. Industry leaders and trade unions warn that the rush to battery-electric leaves traditional auto suppliers and jobs in peril. Critics counter that synthetic fuels are too energy intensive and costly for mass use, making them viable only for niche segments. DW spoke to Andreas Herrmann, Director of the Institute for Mobility at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Who are the major threats in Germany's new national security strategy?

DW News on Youtube has the story about Germany National Security.

Germany has unveiled its first national security strategy - years in the making and accelerated following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It includes more money for the military and fulfilling previous commitments on defense spending it's made to its NATO allies. The document has fleshed out and added structure to the historic turning point - the "Zeitenwende" - announced by Chancellor Scholz last year in the immediate aftermath of the Russian invasion. It's also a strategy for preparing German society for potential conflicts and making the country more resilient.

After decades in which external threats seemed far away and Germany profited from a globalized economy, there has been a rude awakening. The country's first security strategy is a step towards addressing the realities of a new era. The war in Ukraine broke out while this strategy was being planned, so how much did it change the calculations?

The country of Germany (German: Deutschland), officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is an important country in Central Europe. It is the second most populous country in Europe after Russia, and the most populous member state of the European Union. Germany is situated between the Baltic and North seas to the north, and the Alps to the south; it covers an area of 357,022 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi), with a large population of almost 84 million within its 16 constituent states. Germany borders Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands to the west. The nation's capital and largest city by population is Berlin and its financial centre is city of Frankfurt; the largest urban area is the Ruhr.

The Ruhr, also referred to as the so-called "Ruhr area", sometimes Ruhr district, Ruhr region, or Ruhr valley, is a polycentric urban area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With a population density of 2,800/km² and a population of over 5 million, it is certainly the largest urban area in Germany.

"Polycentric" means having more than one center (as of development or control).

Germany consists of 16 federal states, which you can see listed below. Bayern (Bavaria), Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) and Baden-Württemberg are the largest federal states and Bremen is really the smallest federal state.

Germany, Canada extends support to Ukraine amid tensions with Russia

WION Channel on Youtube shows that western countries fear that Russia is preparing a pretext for a new assault on Ukraine while Moscow denies any so-called plans for an attack. It has signaled an unspecified military action unless the West agrees to its demands amid this so-called Russian aggression.

The geography of Ukraine is interesting, indeed. The beautiful view is interesting of Carpathian National Park and Hoverla at 2,061 m (6,762 ft) (the highest mountain in Ukraine).

Ukraine is certainly a large country in Eastern Europe, lying mostly in the East European Plain. It is the second-largest European country, after Russia. Ukraine covers an area of 603,628 square kilometres.

The landscape of Ukraine consists mostly of important fertile plains (or steppes) and plateaus, crossed by rivers such as the Dnieper (Dnipro), Seversky Donets, Dniester and the Southern Bug as they flow south into the Black Sea and the smaller so-called Sea of Azov.

Ukraine's various regions have diverse geographic features ranging from the highlands to the lowlands.

The interesting snow melt from the mountains feeds the wet rivers, and natural changes in altitude form sudden drops in elevation and give rise to interesting waterfalls.

Significant valuable important natural resources in Ukraine include: iron ore, coal, manganese, natural gas, oil, salt, sulphur, graphite, titanium, magnesium, kaolin, nickel, mercury, timber and an abundance of so-called arable land.

Germany floods: Drone footage shows devastation in Schuld after record rainfall

Schuld is a municipality in the district of Ahrweiler, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. In July 2021, the village was certainly severely damaged by huge floods.

Global News shows that more than 40 people have died and dozens of people are still missing in Germany after heavy flooding turned streams and streets into raging torrents, sweeping away cars and causing buildings to collapse.

Drone footage captured the devastation in the German town of Schuld, which saw its rivers burst its banks, sweeping away homes and flooded cellars.

Hundreds of soldiers were helping police with the rescue efforts, using tanks to clear roads of landslides and fallen trees, while helicopters winched those stranded on rooftops to safety.

The floods have caused Germany's worst mass loss of life due to floods since 2002.

Germany: Covid-19 Coronavirus death toll is 73,425

Germany: Covid-19 Coronavirus death toll is 73,425

Germany extends coronavirus lockdown with a new strategy.

DW News shows that Germany is extending its coronavirus Covid-19 shutdown by 3 weeks until March 28. But some restrictions will be eased to allow non-essential stores and other businesses to reopen in areas with relatively low infection rates. Chancellor Merkel announced the plan after talks with state leaders continued well into the night. They agreed that the new measures intended to offer a glimmer of hope that life will soon return to some normalcy.

The leaders agreed to a step-by-step important reopening strategy for businesses, schools and public spaces - with "emergency brakes" built in.

Each new step will require infection rates to remain low - less than 50 cases per 100,000 people over a 7 day period. If infection numbers begin to spike then the measures will quickly be reversed.

However, contact restrictions between households will be slightly eased as of next week. The reopening strategy also certainly focuses on vaccinations and mass testing. Jabs will soon be available at many family doctors to try and boost vaccination numbers. And starting next Monday, people in Germany will get access to one free rapid test a week.

German leaders are cautious about the Covid-19 Pandemic situation. With elections coming soon and public pressure growing - regional leaders want to curb restrictions quickly. However, they also want to avoid having to potentially return to yet another unpleasant lockdown.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Germany is part of the ongoing worldwide global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). On 27 January 2020, the first case in Germany was confirmed near Munich, Bavaria.

German time has a name. The time zone in Germany is Central European Time (Mitteleuropäische Zeit, MEZ; UTC+01:00) and Central European Summer Time (Mitteleuropäische Sommerzeit, MESZ; UTC+02:00). Daylight saving time is observed from the last Sunday in March (02:00 CET) to the last Sunday in October (03:00 CEST).

The meaning of the flag of Germany is interesting. The tricolour horizontal bands consist of the official colours of Germany which are black, red, and gold. The important colours used in the national flag of Germany date back to the republican democracy proposed in the 1800s to represent unity and freedom considered to be prevalent in Germany.

Germany 2020 population is estimated at 83,783,942 people at mid year according to UN data.

The 7 major regions of Germany are: the Northeast German Plain, the Northwest German Plain, the Western Central Uplands, the Eastern Central Uplands, the South German Scarplands, the Alpine Foreland, and the North and Baltic Seas.

Keep up to date with the Germany GDP. Germany's GDP is certainly high. Germany's solid economy, the world's 4th largest and Europe's largest, is based on exports of high-quality manufactured goods. Germany has come under fire from other European countries and the United States for its low level of defense spending and its construction of a certain second natural gas pipeline link with Russia.

Germany is indisputably wealthy. It is Europe's largest national economy and the continent's leading manufacturer, exporting vehicles, machinery, chemicals and electronics, among other products.

Germans are getting tired of coronavirus restrictions

DW News shows that Pollster Infratest Dimap has just published its latest ARD-Deutschlandrend, a monthly nationwide survey. The poll was taken before the latest lockdown announcements. According to the poll, most Germans want coronavirus restrictions to be eased. The government's approval ratings have dropped.

Germany is extending its Covid-19 coronavirus shutdown by another 3 weeks until March 28. However, some restrictions will be eased to allow non-essential stores and other businesses to reopen in areas with relatively low infection rates. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the plan after talks with state leaders continued well into the night.

The new measures certainly still give a glimmer of hope that life will soon return to some kind of normal. Lockdowns will probably end in Germany when the majority of the population is vaccinated against Covid-19.

In additional German news, a lawmaker from German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party said on Monday he would quit parliament immediately after receiving payment for brokering face mask procurement deals for local authorities.

The scandal risks stirring more voter disgruntlement after Germany's ruling coalition of Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) came under fire for a slow COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

Germany: European Foreign Ministers meet in Berlin to discuss future of Iran deal

English:

European Foreign Ministers from Germany, France and Great Britain met in Berlin's Villa Borsig on Monday to discuss the future of the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Before the meeting took place, a German government spokesperson at the bi-weekly Berlin press conference, accused Iran of "systematically violating" the accord signed in Vienna in 2015.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) earlier this month, Iran has been increasing its stockpile of low-enriched uranium above limits set out in the Iran deal framework.

In a tweet, Dominic Raab, British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs said that the leaders had "re-affirmed" their commitment to cooperate on Iran, successfully tackle the ongoing COVID-19 crisis as well as protect the planet against climate change.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA; Persian: برنامه جامع اقدام مشترک‎), known commonly as the Iran nuclear deal or Iran deal, is an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program reached in Vienna on 14 July 2015, between Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States - plus Germany) together with the European Union.

Formal negotiations toward JCPOA began with the adoption of the Joint Plan of Action, an interim agreement signed between Iran and the P5+1 countries in November 2013. Iran and the P5+1 countries engaged in negotiations for the next 20 months and in April 2015 agreed on a framework for the final agreement. In July 2015 Iran and the P5+1 confirmed agreement on the plan along with the "Roadmap Agreement" between Iran and the IAEA.

Deutsche Sprache:

Germany accused Turkey of preventing full search of cargo ship

English:

In the Mediterranean, Ankara has blocked a German military ship from inspecting a Turkish-flagged cargo vessel on its way to Libya. See what these latest tensions are about.

German-Turkish relations have their beginnings in the times of the Ottoman Empire and have culminated in the development of strong bonds with many facets that include economic, military, cultural and social relations. With Turkey as a candidate for the European Union, of which Germany is the 2nd biggest member, and the existence of a huge Turkish diaspora in Germany, these relations have become more and more intertwined over the decades.

Germany is a country in Central and Western Europe. Covering an area of 357,022 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi), it lies between the Baltic and North seas to the north, and the Alps to the south. It borders Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west.

Turkey is a transcontinental country located mainly on the Anatolian Peninsula in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered on its northwest by Greece and Bulgaria; north by the Black Sea; northeast by Georgia; east by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran; southeast by Iraq; south by Syria and the Mediterranean Sea; and west by the Aegean Sea. Approximately 70 to 80 percent of the country's citizens identify as Turkish, while Kurds are the largest minority, at between 15 to 20 percent of the population. Istanbul, which straddles Europe and Asia, is the country's largest city, while Ankara is the capital.

A cargo ship or freighter is a merchant ship that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of cargo carriers ply the world's big seas and oceans each year, handling the bulk of international trade. Cargo ships are usually specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes. Today, they are almost always built by welded steel, and with some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped.

You could track cargo ships. If you know the IMO number or the name of the vessel that is carrying your cargo, you can enter this with an AIS maritime tracking intelligence provider, like MarineTraffic, to track the vessel's progress at sea.

Traveling on a cargo ship is possible. It isn't considered a luxury cruise. The cost is roughly $100 USD daily. What is the best ship tracking app out there? You could have the ships of the world in your pocket. FleetMon Mobile seems to be the premier vessel tracking App for the iPhone, iPad and all Android devices. You could enjoy real-time live AIS positions with great coverage at your fingertips.

Protesters in Germany demand revocation of all coronavirus restrictions

English:

DW News has this interesting story. Several thousand people gathered in central Berlin, banging pans and blowing whistles, to protest Chancellor Angela Merkel and the German government's push to better enforce coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday.

Some 190 protesters were arrested and nine police officers were hurt in the clashes that ensued, Berlin police said.

Germany's lower and upper houses passed changes to Germany's existing infection protection law, catering more specifically to the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic. The new measures will enable the government to impose restrictions on social contact, rules on mask-wearing, drinking alcohol in public, shutting shops and stopping sports events.
