Ecuador coronavirus death toll is 2,334

Ecuador's coronavirus death toll has reached 2,334. Ecuador has quite a problem in Latin America. There have been reports of dead bodies left at home and in the streets of Guayaquil, Ecuador. This is a city that is especially hard-hit by the pandemic. Hospitals are overfilled here. They are turning away even very ill patients and funeral homes are unavailable for burial. Quarantined people face hunger. There is political turmoil.

Data on deaths and infections is incomplete in Ecuador. The numbers are likely much higher. The government of Guayas Province, where Guayaquil is located, says 6,700 residents died in the first half of April, as compared to 1,000 in a normal year. Some analysts estimate that Ecuador’s real coronavirus death toll may be 15 times more than the official number.

Ecuador is one of the first non-wealthy countries to face such a large outbreak.

Unfortunately, Ecuador recently had one of the worst Amazon oil spills in 15 years. Indigenous communities in Ecuador have fallen ill from the oil spill. The Indigenous tribes say that they have been refused treatment because of Covid-19.

About 120,000 people from around 150 indigenous communities living along the Coca and Napo river banks in the Amazon region have been affected by the accident.

The accident in Orellana province, near the Peruvian border, occurred on April 7 when a landslide ruptured 3 of the country's main pipelines.

Communities closest to the source of the spill have reported an outbreak of illnesses. These include splitting headaches and diarrhoea. Many people claim that local medical centres and hospitals have turned them away because they can only accept Covid-19 patients or those with acute emergencies.
