In the near future, self-driving cars will have to make ethical judgments. In some situations, cars will face some Moral Dilemmas. Experts are thinking about how Self-Driving Cars should be programmed. Perhaps, some day cars will completely take over the driver's job. Unfortunately, each year around 1.35 million people die in road accidents and around 20 - 50 million are injured.

A moral dilemma is a conflict of morals, where someone is forced to choose between two or more options and there is a moral reason to choose and not choose each option. No matter what choice you make in these situations, you always end up compromising some moral value.

A self driving car is the future dream of humankind. One of the most popular cars is the Tesla self driving car. You might have wondered about the Tesla self driving car price.   1. Probably the driving computer can't handle the complexities of the situation. Some cars even mistake a Burger King Sign for a stop sign and things like that. Hopefully, it can tell the difference between a human and an animal. Good luck with your visual skills, computers.

  2. Isn't it ironic that a car itself might drive safer than a human could drive. For example, a drunk human speeds through a stop sign and kills someone.

    There sure was that self driving car that thought a Burger King Sign was a Stop Sign. It is important that the car always knows the correct stop sign.

  3. Chances of accidents (fatal or not) are not at all small chances. After a lifetime of driving, people have lots of accidents. Insurance companies know this. That's why insurance companies profit. Especially, with rules like "if drunk driving = insurance pays nothing." Hopefully, computers can drive better and as good as possible. (LOL Tell to insurance company that car was "self driving" - these days they would say probably you should be ready to take the wheel yourself always.)

    The moral dilemma can be kind of like that example where a speeding train can change to Track #1 or Track #2. On one track there is a guy, and on another track there is another guy. You would have to choose to kill one or the other. It would be a rare situation.

    Maybe a self-driving can would not swerve onto the sidewalk because 4 people run into the road. I would drive on sidewalk to avoid hitting people on the road. Watch out for hitting a high fence - it could cause the car to roll over.

  4. A good point i came accross in this year is that self-driving cars don't need to be perfect, they just need to be better than humans. If the number of deaths or injured people decrease, the technology will prove itself beneficial.

    1. "Better than humans" - yes, that would be beneficial. It is nice to know that self-driving cars cannot be impaired (like humans can be impaired). Hopefully, this technology will be successful.

      There are complexities when a self-driving car crashes. There was a case where an Uber testing vehicle hit and killed a woman in 2018. Uber reached a settlement with the victim’s family.

    2. Logically, that makes sense as a threshold. But in terms of public opinion, people are extremely sensitive to any threat that seems "new", even if it's replacing a more dangerous existing threat. A backlash could set back adoption by decades.

    3. Yeah, this would be something very new. It is unlike anything that ever happened. Only in futuristic movies we saw self-driving vehicles or robots driving vehicles.
