Decision to block the Keystone XL pipeline

The Keystone Pipeline System is an oil pipeline system in Canada and the United States, commissioned in 2010 and owned by TC Energy and as of 31 March 2020 the Government of Alberta.

The Keystone XL pipeline construction recently has been "scrapped." A permit that was originally granted in 2019.

The Canada government is thinking about a comprehensive North American energy strategy as workers get the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The project's presidential permit was rescinded by USA President Joe Biden on his first day in office, prompting outrage from Alberta's provincial government. TC Energy, the proponent, had pre-emptively ceased construction of the project.

Canada and USA share a highly integrated energy system, including criss-crossing infrastructure such as pipelines and electricity transmission systems.

The pipeline, first announced in 2005, would have carried 830,000 barrels of crude a day from the oilsands in Alberta to Nebraska.

TC Energy has already laid off 1,000 workers in Alberta.

  1. More than a dozen USA states are considering lawsuits against Washington, D.C. following the cancellation of Keystone XL, but experts say Alberta should pursue diplomatic avenues to try to revive the project before taking various legal action of its own.

The reviving of Keystone XL is a long-shot bid.
